Apprentice Citywide School Cook takes top prize in prestigious chef competition
Salford City Council’s very own Sophie Swindells, a dedicated school cook with Citywide Services, has beaten top chefs from high-end restaurants to win the Apprentice/Adult Chef of the Year award at the Greater Manchester Colleges competition.
Sophie, who works at Brentnall Primary School, entered the competition to challenge perceptions of school meals. Competing against chefs in fine dining establishments, she wowed the judges with her take on a luxury Sunday roast. Her dish featured roast chicken with lemon and thyme stuffing, jus roti, bread sauce, roasted redskin potatoes, butternut squash gratin, wild garlic kale, and glazed Chantenay carrots.
The judges were so impressed that three of them offered her a job on the spot.
“I never expected to win,” said Sophie. “I entered for fun, but to get this kind of recognition is amazing. One judge even said it was the best meal he’d tasted in the competition!”
Sophie balances her role with studying for a Level 2 Production Chef qualification at Worsley College, part of Salford City Colleg Group, one evening a week. Her journey is a testament to the value of apprenticeships, which offer hands-on experience and career progression while earning a wage.
Councillor Teresa Pepper, Salford City Council’s Lead Member for Skills, Work, and Business Support Services, praised Sophie’s achievement:
“Sophie’s success showcases the incredible talent we have in Salford. Her journey is a fantastic example of how apprenticeships can develop skills and create real opportunities for career growth. We are committed to supporting apprenticeships and investing in people’s futures.”
Sophie has also launched her own catering business, LazyGrazin, proving that hard work and passion can open doors to exciting new opportunities.
Congratulations, Sophie—Salford is proud of you!
