I’d like to get some work experience or volunteer

Looking to build your skills, gain practical experience, or give back to the community?

Salford offers a wide range of work experience and volunteering opportunities to help you grow personally and professionally. Whether you're looking to explore career options, enhance your CV, or simply make a difference, there are plenty of options.

From local businesses to charities and community projects, Salford is full of opportunities that can help you develop your talents while contributing to the city's vibrant and supportive community.

The package of support for Salford residents includes access to voluntary work placements which are available to residents aged 16 and above, and can be delivered flexibly for up to eight weeks.

Salford Futures work with a range of local training providers to ensure placements and other work-related opportunities offered by the council and its partners are complemented by an appropriate skills offer and progression opportunity.

To apply for a voluntary work placement, please complete the referral form below.

Who is it for?

Salford Futures is for residents aged 16 and above who are not currently in work or education. Whether you have worked in the past or not, we offer support to those who are keen and willing to work but feel held back due to lack of workplace knowledge or skills. You may be lacking in confidence, or a situation in the past has stopped you from being able to work, or just the lack of experience within an area in which you want to work. We aim to assist anyone who needs a little help to get them on their feet and into a stable and paid job.

What is involved?

  • a two to four day work placement lasting eight weeks
  • a review mid-way through the programme to ensure it is going well and meeting your personal development goals
  • a final review session to evaluate how the placement has been overall
  • travel support in the form of bus passes
  • up to £80 in One4all vouchers upon completion

If you are claiming any out-of-work benefit (Jobseeker's Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment Support Allowance, Universal Credit or Income Support) and are offered a work experience placement, you are advised to inform your Jobcentre Plus advisor to check if this will affect your benefits.

What skills could be developed?

Salford Futures work experience may give you the chance to improve or use your skills in:

  • communication
  • team working
  • customer service
  • telephone skills
  • time management, including prioritising workload
  • problem solving and working on own initiative
  • health and safety awareness
  • equality and diversity awareness
  • develop existing IT skills (Windows, word processing, databases, spreadsheets)
  • ability to work with an organisation's processes and procedures, such as data protection and confidentiality

We encourage you to put your existing skills into practice alongside developing and enhancing new ones.

What placements will be available?

Placements vary for each intake, but usual placements include administration, finance, customer service, catering, childcare, teaching support roles, estate management, fashion and health and social care. Please note a Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check may have to be carried out depending on the nature of the job.

When is the next Salford Futures programme?

Salford Futures run three work placement intakes each year, which normally take place in February, June and October. Email salfordfutures@salford.gov.uk to find out exact dates of the next intake.

What happens after the programme?

Once you finish your placement and if you are still looking for employment, we will support you by:

  • registering you with the Salford Employment Hub
  • referring you to other employers
  • sending you job and apprenticeship opportunities
  • helping you prepare for interviews

We received the following feedback from residents who took part in work placements:

I have gained confidence and social skills.

I got a full-time apprenticeship with Salford City Council.

I have improved my self-confidence, especially regarding to the language skill which is really important to me.

I have gained full-time employment.

I have gained experience working with the public and started an apprenticeship.

I have now secured a fixed-term position within Salford City Council.

I have gone from having no experience in administration to feeling confident that I would be happy in this career.

It has provided me with the skills, support and confidence I needed to pursue a career in conservation.
